《波特诺伊的怨诉》是菲利普•罗斯的第三部长篇小说，也是一部话题之作。1969年甫一推出，便引起轰动并长居畅销榜，销量甚至超过了同年出版的《教父》。后入选”美国文库”20世纪百佳，1923-2005年《时代》周刊百佳。有评论称，该小说同索尔•贝娄的《赫索格》一道，定义了1960年代的美国犹太文学。

故事发生在心理医师施皮尔福格尔的躺椅上。主人公波特诺伊饱受神经官能症的困扰，他找到心理医师施皮尔福格尔，向他倾诉自己从小到大所面临的困境：父亲望子成龙的期待、母亲专制霸道的溺爱、犹太身份的困扰……

大胆而近乎荒诞的告白背后，暗含的是他那一代美国犹太青年内心的道德焦虑，是传统的犹太道德意识与60年代美国社会自由意识之间的冲突、失衡，也是美国犹太人在当代美国社会的生存焦虑。
